Urology Surgery in Jacksonville, FL

The robotic (or DaVinci) urology program at Mciver clinic brings a long and proud history. In 2005, Mciver physicians (Apoorva Vashi and Douglas Swartz) performed the first robotic surgery of any kind in Northeast Florida. The program has grown over the years from the initial operation of radical prostatectomy to multiple others including prostate, bladder and kidney surgery.

Davinci Prostatectomy

The robotic prostate program at Mciver is led by Dr. Apoorva Vashi. Dr. Vashi (along with Dr. Swartz) actually performed the first robotic surgery of any kind in NE Florida. Dr. Vashi has served as a consultant for the DaVinci system and has been involved in training multiple physicians on the use of the system. Make an appointment to learn how a well performed robotic prostatectomy can cure prostate cancer while maintaining urinary control and sexual function. In 2018, Dr. Vashi recruited Dr. Matthew Nielsen to help with continued growth of the program. Dr. Nielsen performs robotic surgery of the prostate, kidney and bladder.

Davinci Nephrectomy

The minimally invasive kidney surgery program includes laparoscopic and robotic kidney removal and kidney reconstruction. The program is run by Dr. Shawn West. Dr. West is an expert in kidney preservation. Many cases of kidney cancer can now be managed by saving a portion of the kidney. Options include tumor freezing (cryotherapy), radiofrequency ablation, and partial nephrectomy using the DaVinci system.

Urologic conditions

The urology specialty covers conditions of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive system. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, bladder, and associated connective tissues and muscles. The male reproductive system encompasses the prostate gland, penis, testicles, and associated connective structures. Conditions that cause problems of these systems include, but are not limited to, enlarged prostate, benign tumors, and cancer and may require medical attention. In the case of cancer or when lifestyle changes, medicine, and other options do not ease symptoms of other conditions, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Types of surgery

In the past, surgeons made large incisions in skin and muscle so that they could directly see and work on the area of concern. This is called open surgery. Today doctors still perform open surgery, but they can also perform many urologic procedures using minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery, possibly with da Vinci® technology.

Both minimally invasive surgical options require one or a few small incisions that doctors use to insert surgical equipment and a camera for viewing. In laparoscopic surgery, doctors use special long-handled tools to perform surgery while viewing magnified images from the laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.

What is a da Vinci surgical system?

The da Vinci is a surgical system comprised of three components: surgeon console, patient-side cart, and vision cart.

Surgeon Console

The surgeon console is where your surgeon sits during the procedure, has a crystal-clear 3DHD view of your anatomy, and controls the instruments. The tiny instruments are “wristed” and move like a human hand, but with a far greater range of motion.

Patient Cart

The patient-side cart is positioned near the patient on the operating table. It is where the instruments used during the operation move in real time in response to your surgeon’s hand movements at the surgeon console.

Vision Cart

The vision cart makes communication between the components of the system possible and provides a screen for the care team to view the operation.

It’s important to remember that Intuitive does not provide medical advice. After discussing all options with your doctor, only you and your doctor can determine whether surgery with da Vinci technology is appropriate for your situation. You should always ask your surgeon about his or her training, experience, and patient outcomes.

da Vinci Xi® System Precaution Statement

The demonstration of safety and effectiveness for the specific procedure(s) discussed in this material was based on evaluation of the device as a surgical tool and did not include evaluation of outcomes related to the treatment of cancer (overall survival, disease-free survival, local recurrence) or treatment of the patient’s underlying disease/condition. Device usage in all surgical procedures should be guided by the clinical judgment of an adequately trained surgeon.

Medical Advice and Locating a Doctor

Patients should talk to their doctor to decide if da Vinci surgery is right for them. Other options may be available and appropriate. Only a doctor can determine whether da Vinci surgery is appropriate for a patient’s situation. Patients and doctors should review all available information on both non-surgical and surgical options in order to make an informed decision.

Surgeons who perform surgery using the da Vinci system can be found using the Surgeon Locator. Intuitive Surgical provides surgeons with training on the use of the da Vinci system but does not certify, credential or qualify the surgeons listed in the Surgeon Locator.
